When you are testing for radon you want to make sure you get quality results. You can get a test kit from a big box store or online and get an accurate reading, but charcoal canisters only give you a snap shot at the time of the test. The only way to get a good understanding of your potential exposure to radon gas is to get a professional test done with a continuous radon monitor (CRM). This is what we use, a CRM takes readings every hour so we can see how it fluctuates due to weather or if closed home conditions where not followed. There are guidelines that need to be followed in order to get an accurate reading according to the EPA. Some of those include 20 inches above the floor, placed in the lowest "livable" area of the home (NOT crawl spaces or closets), 3 feet from any window or outside door, and CRM's need to be re-calibrated annually. These and other conditions need to be followed in order to obtain accurate results.
